Jenkins was a beast last year but struggled this year with injuries and Dion Sims is the new Fasano...good blocking TE with good hands!

....Who can't run. Yay.

Fills a need and fills it well. Wouldn't have mind it later. But in the early 4th, with who they left on the board...Unspectacular pick.

Jenkins is kind of an over kill at nickel personnel; but he's a nice value in the 4th.

A blocking tight end and a special teams player. You would have thought there were better choices to be made here....like a running back or a tight end with speed. Comparing Sims to Gronkowski, as Mayock indicated, was ridiculous.

Comparing him to Gronk is ludicrous, but he's a great blocking tight end and should complement Dustin Keller quite nicely

A blocking tight end was needed, but probably could have been had in the later rounds. Same goes for a LB projected as a special teams guy.

I think Sims was a fallback option. They targeted Eifert, and I've read they were prepared to take Jordan Reed. The TE market got pretty thin and I'm grateful they aren't just going to bank on Egnew now.

Sounds like Jenkins can be a good cover LB and developmental depth.

I know people wanted WRs but as I think they are going to let Matthews and Binns compete for the 4th and 5th spots, and maybe sign a few June 1st cut or two.

I wanted a RB. There were plenty of good backs there, but many are now gone. A TE with speed. WR depth before the 6th round would be nice, since our 6th round receiver last year is long gone.

Wallace, Hartline, Gibson, Matthews, Binns, Keller. I think we're pretty set on pass catchers.

I am good with Wallace, Hartline, Gibson and Keller. We could have improved on the rest. We need a RB to push Thomas off the roster.

From what I've heard they've been impressed with Matthews and Binns and expect them to see more playing time next year

Sounds like what they used to say about Marlon Moore, for years.

Jelani Jenkins gives us a nice Will linebacker prospect. One that has excellent speed and the ability to cover down. 4.5 speed in the 40 tells you this kid is one heck of an athlete. I like this pick because he's a solid depth player that will be able to be used on special teams and in sub packages where teams are trying to spread us out.

Dion Sims is I believe either the 1st or 2nd best blocking tightend in this draft. He should be able to find a role replacing Fasano when we need an inline blocker or a guy that can work the short to intermediate parts of the field. While he wasn't my favorite prospect at TE. I can still see why we added him.

Maybe, maybe not.

From Walter Football:

Strengths:
Very strong
Physical
Excellent hands
Superb run-blocker
Big target
Attacks the middle seam
Leaping ability
Good route-running
Red-zone weapon
Asset in short-yardage, goal-line situations
Tough to bring down
Strong drive-blocker
Dangerous seam tight end

Weaknesses:
Fast enough for the NFL?
A Big Ten plodder?
Should slim down
Lacks good speed
May not be a three-down tight end
Only one season as a starter

http://walterfootball.com/scoutingreport2013dsims.php

From NFL.com

Strengths
Has a massive frame, which makes him an inviting targets for quarterbacks to throw to. Soft hands and who catches the ball off of his frame. Uses his size to shield defenders from making a play on the ball. Tough to tackle with the ball in his hands, falls forward. Gains speed in the open field. Understands positioning and shows nimble feet as a run blocker. Good foot quickness as a pass blocker.

Weaknesses
Has trouble adjusting to difficult throws. Stiff in the hips, and not overly flexible. Slow to get off the line of scrimmage, takes time to get out of his stance. Not a mauling blocker like his size would indicate. Hands are often outside of the frame of the defender. Lunges at his blocking assignments. Will have his head down when blocking.

Just saw some highlights of Sims.

He's massive. I think he should drop about 10-15 lbs and improve his quickness. He looks too big to be a seam threat.

It would be nice to see Miami draft a TE that can get down the field. Tired of the blocking TE, taking up a roster spot. One would think as many times as a TE has abused Miami, they would learn from it. Maybe its a state law the fast TE cannot play in the State of FL.

He's way more then a blocking tight end espeically if you watched Michigan State. He's a "blocking tight end" because Michigan State ran the ball almost every play and he was getting a little big but he reportedly lost 20 pounds and when in shape he is actually a good receiver

He ran the exact same 40-yard dash time as Rob Gronkowski, who is one of the best tight ends in the league. Speed isn't everything.

I wonder how is other measurables stack up against Gronk? Is he athletic? Shuttle time, or whatever? The speed is a very interesting point, though. thanks for sharing.

But, for further comparison, Gronk put up one more rep in the bench press. Gronk has longer arms by over an inch, is 1 1/4" taller and their hand size and weight is virtually identical

The Dolphins have Dustin Keller and Charles Clay, guys that can stretch the seam of a defense. Keller is a proven commodity and the light seem to come on a little more for Clay.

Sims may or may not need to lose weight, but if you want to establish the run game, you need that tight end that can handle the inline blocking. Sims can do that and he brings pass catching ability as well.

Reading all this stuff, reminds me how JJ told us how Larry Shannon was bigger, faster and had more production than Randy Moss. I sure am glad Miami did not draft Moss, since they landed Shannon two Rds. later.

I'm not trying to say that this kid is going to be anywhere near Gronk's level, I'm just saying to knock him for his size or speed is ridiculous. He's pretty much the exact same size and speed as one of the best in the game right now.

There is a huge difference between football speed & track speed. Guys can run a 4.3 on the track, but put pads on them & they run a 4.5.

Then you have the guys they run a 4.6, but put pads on them & a ball in their hands & they turn into a 4.4 type guy.

I want to know their football speed, not their track speed.

The more I read about Jelani Jenkins the more I love the pick. Apparently he dropped back into coverage about 60% of the time and was even asked to play safety on occasion. With 4.5 speed and the ability to cover, I think our linebacker group just got a whole lot faster and gifted.

The only issue I see is that we just signed Wheeler this year, we drafted Kaddu in the 5th round last year (who Philbin seems to be high on), and we also have Jonathan Freeney on the roster as well. Jenkins is a talented young prospect, but the odds of him getting playing time outside of special teams are slim with Wheeler and Kaddu in front of him.

Misi and Trusnick are our two SAM or strongside linebackers, although Trusnick is more of a special teamer. Wheeler will be our starting WILL or weakside linebacker. I think Jenkins will battle for the backup weakside job. If anyone competes with Misi it will be Dion Jordan or Josh Kaddu. Both were SAM linebackers at Oregon. Both could give Misi a run for his money this year. In the case of Jordan, he could give us a huge upgrade at the position.

You're right, I flipped the defense for some reason. I think that Jenkins might give Misi a run at strongside. I anticipate Dion being much more of a DE than a linebacker

Having football gear on might slow some guys down more than others, but I can't see it making someone faster.

Its called playing speed. Some guys run faster with a football in their hands racing for a TD, than running for a tape with no one after them.

Player like Jerry Rice can run a 4.7 at the combine, but not get caught from behind in a game. Some guys do not play as fast as their 40 time.

Dphins4me, I can clearly see you aren't happy with the tight end pick, but really Ireland didn't pull the trigger earlier so he could address other blaring needs, he still went out and got a guy that can certainly block, which was still very much a need. Keller, Clay and Egnew are the seam threats, so still keep that in mind.

Once the draft got past Eifert, Ertz and Kelce, you pretty much knew it was slim pickings and we have to remember, the Miami scouts and coaching staff are the ones that break down film on these guys, so they must know a bit more than us. His pick may not have lit the world on fire, but he may be the guy to help blow up holes for our running backs and the unsung heroes (blockers) are still vital at the TE position.

A few highlights on Sims:

The key for Jenkins is if he and Kaddu can step up this year because if they do now Misi can be let go after this season and now we have much cheaper, younger, faster and more athletic options
