Post Sherman: Ryan Tannehill will be most-improved QB
Quote:
...

"This young man will be the most improved quarterback in the National Football League from year one to year two this year -- I promise you that," Sherman told the Dolphins' official site. "He's working extremely hard.

"I thought he had a good rookie year for what we asked him to do," Sherman said.

I agree. When you factor the big leap most players take between year one and year two with the weapons we added around him, Tannehill is primed to improve big time. Let's hope the kid takes the next step (improved TD to INT ratio, more yards, more touchdowns), and this team takes the next step (more points, more wins, playoffs).

The most promising thing i saw from him was that he went long stretches without an int....If not for 2 bad games he would have had very impressive stats.

Cutting down on the ints would be great but i would like to see about 10 more td's

Tannehill really cut down on the interceptions in the last 6 game. In the last 6 games of the season Tannehill went 3 wins and 3 losses with 6 TD's and 2 interceptions against Seattle, New England, San Francisco, Jacksonville, Buffalo and New England.

I read something near the end of last season that the analyst (whoever it was) thought the lack of weapons Tannehill had would serve him well moving forward.

He had to thread the needle with every throw in 2012, forcing him to improve his accuracy. Now that he has greater accuracy, more weapons and presumably more separation from defenders, he could actually make a huge leap forward.

CANNOT WAIT!!!!

Not true, but I do expect the move to be upward.

Agreed, things could have been a lot worse considering the lack of talent at the receiver position and the injuries sustained throughout the offense. Tannehill did a fair job dealing with the adversity of being a rookie quarterback on a rebuilding roster. For the most part, those who watched him play last season could see that the kid has talent, but there were several external factors hold things back. That said, I agree that this is the year he should make a positive jump forward. With improvements made to the receiver corps and a full season/offseason under his belt, Tannehill is primed to improve.

I'm not going to heap expectations on the kid. I know there is something called the Sophomore Slump. I also know that just because you add a bunch of weapons to a roster, doesn't make them a team. We've been here before guys. Expectations are soaring as high as the moon. We may have to settle for mediocre given the schedule and the weak offensive line we have currently (I assume this will be addressed to some extent though).

And completion percentage. He only completed 58% of his passes last season, which isn't going to get it done in the future.

He was ranked something like 27th or 28th in passer rating.

Statistically, there is nowhere to go but up.

How many QBs were rated? I'm guessing 35-40. So yes he can go down.
(I tried to look it up on my phone but it stopped at 30, which was still about 6 points above where I know Mark Sanchez was. So I know it is more than 30)

Lets put it this way. For players that took 60% of the available snaps or more, he was third to last. Only Mark Sanchez and Brandon Weeden were worst.

And still better than the Henster at 30....

Seriously though he did show alot and was right there with Luck. Who many considered to have had a great rookie season...With alot more fire power around him.

And for a guy who some experts said he shouldn't even have played last year he did a pretty good job of proving them wrong.

Andrew Luck had 1,100 more yards and 11 more touchdowns. Is that really "right there with him"?

Tannehill did have a better completion percentage than Luck though, for what it's worth.

How many wins should have reasonably been expected out of a rookie without weapons, a shortened training camp, no offensive weapons a new HC, OC and DC?

I'd say he did better than expected considering.

And Sanchez and Weeden are better than others have been. How would Dolphin Nation react at this performance:

12 Games, 246 Attempts, 120 Completions, 48.8%, 1,287 yards, 5.23 ypa, 3 TD's, 11 INTs, 9 Fumbles, QB rating 50.0

Those were Jamarcus Russel's numbers in 2009. Who incidentally had a 77 QB rating the previous year. Tannehill's was a 76 last year.

It can get worse.

Ok... Again I am referencing his ranking from a rating perspective. I'll stand by my comment.

By rankings it can only get a little worse.
By performance it can get a LOT worse.

Either way, he was bad enough to lead the team to 7 wins. It can get worse.

Yes, by QB rating alone they were even. Call me crazy, but I don't think that QB rating is the end-all be-all measure of a QB. By almost every statistical category Andrew Luck's performance was ahead of Tannehill's.
