I think Incognito is safe this year. Miami has other veterans they can release for cap savings if needed. Carpenter, Patterson & Marshall are three that come to mind.
I'm not really up to date with this, but could we release Carpenter sometime during camp (if the staff sees more potential in Sturgis) and still gain some additional cap from it? What is the deadline? I believe it is sometime during the summer?
There is no deadline to release Carpenter and get cap relief. There is however, a June 1st cut-off where the impact of his contract against the cap changes.
The Pre-jun 1 figure for Carpenter is the same as the post June 1, so it doesn't really matter (last year of his contract). I doubt they'll release him until later in TC at any rate. Carpenter is a good enough kicker that someone will like his resume in the NFL...
That all said, I think that there are few guys that are secure in their positions. Philbin has made that pretty clear... My guess is that maybe 4 guys on O and 5 guys on D are penciled in to return where they were last year. We have a slew of question marks (TE, LT, LG, RG, RT, RB, FB/HB, SLB, MLB, ILB, DE, FS, LCB, RCB, PK, LS, Returner) We have lots of names, but exactly where everyone fits in is still in question...
Then there are the injured guys (Keller, Grimes, Louis, Gibson, Kaddu, Marshall, McKrae, D. Thomas). Will they return to their previous status ??
There's a lot of question marks on this team. That's not to say things can't turn out good for us, but there are a lot of questions...anyone save for a 10-12 guys probably have to 'prove' themselves...
