Tannehill lined up in the shotgun 337 times last season. That is more than Super Bowl-winning quarterback Joe Flacco (315), Robert Griffin III (302), Ben Roethlisberger (260) and other notables. But with little weapons, Tannehill didn't have much success. His Total Quarterback Rating was 45.1 from the shotgun formation. Nine of Tannehill’s 13 interceptions in 2012 also were a result from lining up in the shotgun, which must improve. ...

... and Dolphins will run West Coast offenses this season aimed at pushing the pace and scoring points. Thriving in the shotgun is an important piece to the puzzle, especially on third downs.

Now, that is eye opening. The shotgun is supposed to be able to give the quarterback more time to throw the ball and better vision to see the field.

If the passing plays out of that formation were more agressive, it is reasonable that he would have more ints, especially when attempting to be more agressive with the limited receiving targets he had last year.

This team isn't going to play like Pennington. He is going to have ints. The new additions and one year of experience should bring the amount of ints down.

If Miami is going to be a playoff team, it has to really improve on 3rd downs.

Part of his problem last year was not going to the check down option and being a bit too aggressive. A perk of adding a Mike Wallace is that he stretches the defense and opens up room for the check down and slot guy to operate. This hopefully cuts down on the interceptions, increases Tannehill's completion percentage and improves the third down conversions.

Tannehill needs to improve in every aspect of his game this year. Period. He's not a rookie anymore. Now is the time for him to step up, take over this football team, and lead them to the playoffs. Anything less than playoffs this year is a failure in my eyes. While missing the playoffs at 10-6 or 9-7 would be an improvement, it's not where this team wants to be.
