Post Bill Parcells believes his departure hurt the Dolphins
Quote:
...

“I think my leaving created a situation that was not good for the Dolphins retrospectively,” Parcells, now an ESPN analyst and a 2013 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, said in a conference call with media Wednesday.

When Parcells was asked about what he considered the highs and lows of his Dolphins tenure, which lasted less than three seasons, he said: “I’ve thought about it a lot.”

Parcells indicated having a first-time owner (Stephen Ross), head coach (Tony Sparano) and GM (Jeff Ireland) created some challenges, calling it “a difficult dynamic, because everyone, rightfully so, wants to put their own mark on the franchise, and they have every right to do that.”

Parcells indicated he believes his departure created some “political” issues.

Said Parcells: “I saw things happen that I would have made every effort to try to avoid.”

Parcells didn’t mention any specific events. ...

Who cares what you think Bill? Your style of football didn't work in Miami.

I agree, the ground & pound mentality doesn't work in today's NFL. It may cycle back around but it doesn't work now. I feel like our current staff understands this.

Oh please, this guy is a legendary quitter, been coaching since 64, and aside from his time as HC of the Giants, he never spent more than 3 years in one spot, most times he was gone within a year.

He even quit on the Giants after getting the DC job in 79, he went to work outside of football...

Guy has some control and authority issues, even Belicheat picked going back to NE over working as HC with his long time friend.

We know you hurt the Dolphins, same way you hurt the other teams you screwed over. Seems the only team you did not hurt was Atlanta when you backed out of your deal to come here..

To think option # 2 for both Atlanta and Miami was Mike Smith.....

He took the money and ran before he got the job done. If he had a conscience he'd give a big portion of it back for not delivering the goods.

I lost a lot of respect for Parcells during his Dolphin years. Yeah I realize it was Miami's fault for thinking a good coach could be a good GM, but near the end I didn't think Parcells even cared anymore. I've had jobs I didn't like, but I never quit trying to do the best job I could.

The biggest over-hyped, over-blown, over-rated HC of all time. I cannot believe how many sing his praises. Without a certain coach who is in NE with him, then man was very average.

I agree. Growing up a Giant fan (before i moved here) when they played Buffalo in their super bowl win that certain coaches defensive scheme was brilliant. 3 down lineman & just punishing the receivers whenever they even touched the ball was unreal. I know it came down to a Norwood wide right but nobody thought the Giants would even be in that game. And of course when they beat Denver the Defense just dominated.

I will say though when he screwed Atlanta over to come here most here were pleased & predicted a super bowl within 3 years.

I dont remember that. I remember most being pleased but I don't remember most predicting a SB in 3 years. I am sure some did but most ... not sure about that. Of course as my children remind me of often ... hmmm not sure what point I was about to make.

I don't remember that either Aqnor. I had my doubts when he came here.
Now Jimmy Johnson, that was a different story for me, I did think he would take us to the promised land.

Although the Parcell years were tough he took over a bad situation and he made us a better football team. The culture around there had to be pretty rotten after that 1-15 fiasco. I hope to liken us to the 49ers who had a few years with Nolan and Singletary building a strong defensive unit and an offense that could run the ball and then Harbaugh came along and put it all together for them. I'm hoping Philbin is our guy to put these pieces together and give us a run to remember.

I was excited for both of them when they were first hired. I had no doubt we'd win a Super Bowl with JJ. Now with the Tuna, I didn't expect a Super Bowl appearance, but I did expect a playoff team with a good foundation in place as he did with other teams. I think a lot of people here felt the same way.

A few things, all of which are on Parcells, that set this team back after going from 1-15 to AFC East Champs:

1. Actually going from 1-15 to AFC East Champs. That hurt this team with a lower draft pick.

2. Drafting Vontae Davis over Clay Matthews.

3. Pat Friggin White

You mean the same coach who first spread his wings and left, compiling a 36-44 record before being fired and returning home to the nest?

Strange how good someone looks when surrounded by the right people compared to how they look without them.

As to all the "Super Bowl within three years" comments.... I'm fairly certain I heard a few of those comments. But every fan of every underperforming team that gets a new GM/HC has basically those same expectations.
