Brent Grimes looked great in practice today. Truly. He moved with ease following a season in which he missed all but the first game because of a torn Achilles. Grimes and Richard Marshall, who also missed much of last year because of a bad back that required surgery, were the first-team cornerbacks and got the better of the receivers today.

...

The much anticipated training camp debut of Jonathan Martin at left tackle was uneventful. He was not beaten on any pass-rushes by Olivier Vernon, who worked with the starting defense at right end.

...

Speaking of offensive line, right tackle is not an issure right now. Tyson Clabo, wearing No. 77, looks like a good, solid, professional. He's just ... good. Nice technique. Nice tempo. He knows what he's doing for the most part.

...

[UPDATE: At tight end it was Charles Clay and Dion Sims behind Keller today. Michael Egnew was on the far field working with the third and fourth-team offense. So much for him having a great offseason. A rookie has already passed him, apparently.]

- It wasn’t Mike Wallace or Brian Hartline making the big catches on Sunday. Marvin McNutt , a sixth-round draft choice out of Iowa last season for the Eagles, stepped it up in the first practice. He had several nice grabs that was noticed by teammates and fans.

...

- Fifth-year cornerback Dimitri Patterson, who was picked up by the Dolphins late last year and is going through his first training camp with the team, said he would be much further ahead in his career had he been in Philbin’s system earlier.

Patterson said the repetitions players receive in camp are “priceless.”

“I just hope the young guys take advantage of this system the way Philbin structures his practices because it’s really priceless at the end of the day,” Patterson said. “Reps are very precious and the way he structures his practices allows people to make a name for themselves. That’s not a league-round deal.”

Veteran Dan Carpenter got off to a very good start in Miami’s kicking competition. Carpenter got all the kicking reps over rookie Caleb Sturgis and nailed 10 straight field-goal attempts at one point. That run included two made field goals from 49 yards.

Miami Pro Bowl defensive tackle Randy Starks continues to try to earn his starting job back in training camp. Starks held out of organized team activities in protest of his one-year franchise tag. Since returning in minicamp, Starks has played with the second team and also getting a few first-team reps behind converted defensive end Jared Odrick.

--Top performers of Dolphins training camp Day 1 were: 1.WR Marvin McNutt, very active. 2. Jeff Fuller, 70-yard TD catch. 3. Michael Clay, INT ...

--Dannell Ellerbe sacked Ryan Tannehill on a linebacker blitz during pressure package work. The first team offensive line needs to get better with their communication.

--Pocket collapsed on Tannehill on a jailhouse blitz and Kheeston Randall would have gotten the take down.

--Olivier Vernon would have beaten backup left tackle Jeff Adams for a sack on Tannehill during the 11-on-11 pressure package work. ...

Mike Wallace dropped a number of catchable footballs during day one.

--Lamar Miller made a nice jump cut to evade Paul Soliai, who collapsed the pocket, getting into the backfield. ...

--"It is important for every member of this organization to represent the Miami Dolphins accordingly," Philbin said when asked about Pouncey.

--"We started off (practice) with the emphasis of ball security and getting takeaways. We didn't get that right last year," Philbin said.

--Philbin said he's studied all the team's new offensive weapons."We had research projects going on in the offseason. like to steal from best"

--Philbin said what the Dolphins did this offseason did not add to the pressure of winning. "We want to build a consistent program here." ...

--If u watch Lance Louis work it is clear he's not physically where he needs to be because of the ACL injury he suffered last November. ...

--Just watching Mike Wallace drop a catchable ball. Let the panic set in. Calm down!

--I must admit though that John Jerry does look a little thinner than the weight he left minicamp at.

--The Dolphins have John Jerry LISTED at 335 pounds. I'm not certain about that. Fact or fiction?

I would love to see McNutt carve out a role in this offense. I really liked him at Iowa.

We really stole 2 studs from Atlanta. 2 huge upgrades.

Actually Pumper Paul, that's not what comprises a "steal."

How can we steal from the Falcons when they willingly let the players go?

They're total steals, deals, bargains, ....whatever word you want to use Dolphin hater.
Grimes was the biggest steal of free agency.

I know it's going to pain you if this team has major success. :)
