If it looks like a competition and sounds like a competition, maybe, just maybe, it is one — even if it runs counter to everything we have assumed since April.

Case in point: the Dolphins’ tight end position through the first two days of training camp.

Dustin Keller, as expected, has worked with the first-team offense.

But so have Charles Clay and Michael Egnew. And none has been as surprising as rookie Dion Sims.

“Absolutely it’s an open competition,” coach Joe Philbin said Monday. “We’re looking a lot of different combinations at this point in time, and it’s wide open.”

Keller will be the starter... the interesting question will be who makes the roster out of Sims, Clay and Egnew. Really, I think the battle comes down to Clay or Egnew. Sims will probably make the team as a blocking tight end.

Based on posts from two days ago I thought Egnew was already cut.

I think Clay is pretty safe, given what we've heard about how Miami wants to run their offense. If they don't want to run a lot of traditional I-formation sets with a true fullback, Clay is going to have to be that guy.

Unless he flops I think he's safe.

I really think Egnew is competing against himself. If he plays well, he'll make it as a 4th TE. If he doesn't, Miami might carry a 6th WR instead.

Clay wasn't bad last year, just a bit inconsistent. And I know this has been said 100 times already, but some better accuracy from Tannehill and Clay might have had a couple of long TD catches.

I think Keller is going to have a very productive year if he can stay healthy.

Wouldn't surprise me much if Clay took up the FB spot on the depth chart. Lane would be cut and they keep all the tight ends with the possibility of putting Kyle Miller? on the practice squad if eligible.

Wow if Egnew made it that would be impressive for a guy who is just not a football player. ; )

I think I'd rather have Lane at FB than Egnew at TE. Will know more after a few preseason games.
