DAVIE, Fla. -- Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill looks the part. He's big. He's strong. He's got a good arm. And he works at it. But there are a few things that concern me about him. The great quarterbacks anticipate receivers coming open and throw on time. Tannehill seems to wait for the player to come open and then make a throw. He also doesn't anticipate second-level throws. In the practices I watched, he seemed to miss some available receivers coming free on the second level, and instead took a check-down throw. That can't happen. He has to be more decisive with his reads and make quicker decisions. If he can get to another level in 2013, the Dolphins could be a playoff team. ...

-One thing's for certain watching the Dolphins practice: They will go deep a lot. By signing high-priced free agent Mike Wallace, the Dolphins added one of the fastest receivers in the league. And with Tannehill having a big arm, it makes sense to let it fly. Wallace and Tannehill have missed a few big-play chances during the early part of camp, but I expect them to grow as the Dolphins move to the season. ...

I am not sure Martin has to the foot speed to play the left side against all the big-time pass rushers and protect Tannehill's backside. ...

Keep an eye on second-year player Olivier Vernon. I think he will be the guy to emerge as this team's second pass rusher in 2013. -Charles Clay is both a fullback and a tight end, the kind of valuable reserves teams need. Clay flashed at times last season as a pass receiver, and he's one of those Swiss Army Knife-type of players. With veteran Dustin Keller in as a tight end, Clay will provide a nice compliment as a pass catcher. Deon Sims will likely be the blocker. Clay does need to be more consistent.

---Look for the Dolphins to blitz more with linebackers Dannell Ellerbe and Phillip Wheeler, ...

---The Dolphins will be an 8-8 team at best. I just don't see them beating the Patriots in the division. Do you? ...

---The Dolphins new logo looks soft. Are they?

---Dolphins safety Reshad Jones will be a top-50 player after this season.

You do realize that Cam Wake isn't going to be playing at such a high level for much longer? He is on the wrong side of 30.

Its early guys. Training camp is where the chemistry is going to come from. This team may take 4 to 8 regular season games to gel. Progress not perfection!

I have my concerns about Tannehill but in 2009 Pat Kirwan walked out of the Fins training camp stating Chad Henne is going to be a superstar in the NFL.

I'll wait until a few preseason games have played out before I get excited or worried.

Hey I cant knock the guy, he seems to have potential to be one of the best. And I think we will see plenty of him this year in various spots. It really seems to have lit a fire under Vernon, and 3 top notch DE's is not a bad thing. I really am not to worried about Wake's age either, he would have to show some signs of wear..

I just hope we can score points on offense. Seems to me that is an area of this team everyone has questions about...

The team you are trying to beat is the Cheaters...The formula for beating them has been pass rush pass rush and more pass rush....

The Giants are not what i would call a high powered offense...And alot was invested in the offense as well this offseason

He sure does have the potential to be a beast. But he's what 31 or 32 now? It's time to start grooming his replacement (Vernon and/or Jordan).

I meant Jordan has potential, I think he cant turn out to be better than Wake and for a longer time frame. I have no issue with him as a player, or where he was drafted. Wake is a beast, getting older sure, but I have no reason not to expect another 2-3 years at this level. Like I said, nothing wrong with having a lot of ways to hide coverage and attack the QB.

I know its too early to tell, and defense is always ahead in camp for whatever reason. I just read all these reports about the struggles of the offense, and the offensive line. Then add in the fact that Vernon has been the early camp standout, I just hope they get it together and can score points on offense unlike last year...

This formula right here is reason enough for Miami to be better than 8-8.

Until this team actually turns the corner and goes 12-4 wins the division and makes a deep playoff run, you can't really fault Prisco or anyone else doubting that this team is going to contend with the pats. I personally think that we are going to make some noise this year. But as any long time Dolphins fan will tell you, we have had years of disappointment now. The schedule looks tough coming out of the gate, trips to Indy and New Orleans with home games against the Falcons and Ravens. If we are 2-2 in that stretch I will be happy.

I agree. We're a young team and there are a lot of question marks at QB, LT, RT, RG, TE, and CB for a lot of the non-Dolphins media to get too excited over. Also, the media has been burned many times by jumping aboard teams that spend a lot of money in free agency. I think this is a potential 10-6 team.

When you look at our schedule, there's only about 7 matchups where the opponent is equal or superior to us offensively.

And only 1 or 2 teams on the schedule can hang with us defensively. (I'm saying we'll be a top 6 defense)

Most of our toughest games are against great offensive teams with subpar defenses.

As much hype as the offense is getting this offseason, I believe it will be our defense that carries us to a winning record. I have us conservatively slotted at 9-7 and a playoff berth. That's good enough for a team with so many new pieces in place.

Swerve, I think Miami has a brutal start to their schedule having to travel to an improved Cleveland team, going to Indy, Atlanta home and on the road to New Orleans for a Monday game.

I certainly hope we are vastly improved or we could be in for a 1-3 start. If they go 2-2 during this beginning stretch that would be nice. 0-4 start would be demoralizing.

I'm actually accounting for us to start 1-3 Finhead, and then pull the upset against Baltimore to move to 2-3 at the bye week.

Then I think we will win 7 or 8 of our remaining 11 games....the winnable stretch of our schedule.

Tannehill had a very high completion % last year and hit plenty of guys on the fly. I will agree his deep ball needs polish and HOPEfully that will come. An effective short passing game with a good defense is good for 8-8. Throw in some homerun potential and 10-6 is doable.

If we were to go 1-3...The one would have to be Indy.

Clev. is not a playoff contender and the other two are non conference...So in the grand scheme of things we could make up for the others with good conference and division play.

The Indy game will be huge because they are a serious wild card contender.

Rodney I think the Fins and Colts are the 2 best upcoming young teams in the AFC. I have them both making the playoffs, along with Cincy winning their division. The same old teams are gettin old and torn apart. The shelf life for the Ravens, Pats and Steelers is expiring.
