Post 2014 Cap
Any word on what the cap space is next year? I know we set ourselves up nice but with the recent moves of Marshall and Carp, I was wondering if anyone knew off hand how we looked.

Post Re: 2014 Cap
It is difficult to tell what our cap situation will be in 2014 because the salary cap has not been established for that year.

For 2013, the cap is $123 million and right now it is expected to remain flat for 2014, so let's assume the cap will be $123 million in 2014.

That being the case, the Dolphins right now would be approximately $12 million under the cap with 57 players under contract.

That means the Dolphins will have enough space to operate and sign rookies in 2014, but not much else. Maybe one or two significant, but not huge, free agent signings.

We're going to basically have to ride the hand we have for at least two years before things open up again in 2015.

That's true PR. I expect them to roll over at least 15 million ontop of the roughly 13 we will already have. It could be more rolled over. Could be less if Ireland makes one of his preseason trades.

Don't forget about Starks' contract...........if he does stay it will likely be at a reduced price.

Yes, but despite the ability to roll over, you have $85 million tied up in 29 contracts for 2015...

I doubt they use that in 2014, but rather roll it over again to 2015.

I don't disagree, but don't leave out the fact that a few of those contracts will undoubtedly be reworked or cut entirely. Things change quickly in the NFL.

One of those contracts that may be reworked is Ryan Tannehill's if he develops. But it won't create cap space, in fact it will probably eat up more.

Well if Starks gets a longer term deal that would be nice. Franchise tags are expensive. however, as deep as we are on DL, he may be a cap casualty after this season.

He wouldn't be a cap casualty, just a free agent.

What I mean is, they may not work his deal based on his potential cap number for next year.

Right now, his cap number for 2014 is $0.
He isn't under contract for 2014.

Well no kidding...

Moral of the story, he won't have a cap number in 2014 because they won't drop the dime on him due to our massive depth.

Speaking of 2014.....

The jets look to be the worst team, and DE Jadeveon Clowney looks to be the #1 pick, so the Dolphins better get that OL ready or I fear for Tannehill's health.

Of course, Clowney could not declare for the NFL draft, or the jets could be in such desperate need for a QB that they shop the #1 pick, or they could end up not even having the #1 pick. It's just something I have been pondering while waiting on this season to start.

I'd also love to see the Dolphins get Sammy Watkins, but I'm pretty sure it won't happen. I am a big Clemson fan, and really wanted Spiller. It killed me to see him go to the bills.

NY, Oakland and Jacksonville are 3 of the worst teams I've ever seen. I feel bad for whoever misses out on Bridgewater and Clowney.
