2011 NFL Draft Analysis (ESPN Insider)http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft/pl ... vin-austin
What he brings: Austin's off-field issues and concerns about his maturity pushed him down the board, but as a football player he has rare initial quickness for his size. He can get into the backfield and has the lateral mobility to make plays when he gets there, though he could show better gap discipline at times as a run defender. Austin has all the physical tools to become a good interior pass-rusher as well.
How he fits: This looks a little bit like a luxury pick because the Giants have quality players at DT but Austin's upside is very intriguing. Barry Cofield could leave in free agency, but Chris Canty Rocky Bernard have signed new deals, so there is not a huge need. However, the Giants love a deep rotation on their DL and they look for matchups along the line that favor them, and Austin is an excellent one-gap penetrator. Any off-the-field issues will be addressed by a group of teammates that have very high character.
Production 3 2007: (12/3) 26 tackles, 6 TFL, 4 sacks. 2008: (13/11) 38 tackles, 1.5 TFL, 1 sack, 1 INT, 1 PBU, 1 blocked kick. 2009: 42 tackles, 6 TFL, 4 sacks, 3 PBU, 1 FR, 1 FF.
Height-Weight-Speed 2 Is shorter than the average DT but has prototypical bulk and elite speed for the position. Hands (10 1/4 inches) are bigger than average but arms (32 5/8) are on the shorter side.
Durability 2 Played in all 38 games during three seasons at UNC. Was limited during 2008 spring practices because of a hamstring strain.
Intangibles 4 Questionable work ethic and maturity. Will take longer to process things than most. Did not start in two games in 2009 due to coaches' decision. Also was suspended and dismissed from team in 2010 for improper dealings with an agent.
Versus the Run 2 Has a quick first step and can penetrate when working one-gap responsibility. While he can quickly get into the backfield, he's still developing in terms of finding the ball and finishing plays. Shows good balance and strength to win most one-on-one battles. Possesses excellent lateral mobility to work down the line and get involved in play outside of the tackles. However, he needs to play with a more consistent pad level when taking on double teams. Also will turn shoulders at times when he doesn't win initially and he typically winds up getting washed down the line in those instances.
Pass Rush Skills 2 Still developing as a pass rusher at this point. Has the strength to get good push with bull rush and collapse the pocket from inside. Also flashes an effective spin move. However, often plays too high and did not show ability to split double team during film study. Closing burst is good and can get to QB when having a clear run. Can sniff out screen and redirect to get involved in play.
Quickness (hands/feet) 1 Very good short-area quickness for size. Shows nimble on feet. Has a quick first step but can improve snap anticipation. Quick hands and uses them well in combat to discard blocks. Possesses excellent range for position and has good lateral quickness when executing defensive line twists.
Toughness/Motor 3 Motor is inconsistent and can disappear throughout the course of games. Has good stamina and will make some effort plays that most DTs can't. He is at his best on the move and will flash some pursuit effort that really impresses. But when you really study his effort, the times he starts to quit on plays are almost always when he loses the initially and is not able to stay on the move. His effort when double-teamed is generally poor.
