according to Pro Football Focus’ advance statistics which actually ranks Ellerbe in the bottom tier of linebackers because he doesn’t have “quality tackles.”

I took a look at both Ellerbe and Wheeler’s performances so far in a story in today’s Palm Beach Post. Wheeler is the league’s lowest graded outside linebacker in a 4-3 scheme ...

Wheeler has been terrible, especially in coverage, which is supposed to be his strong suit. He bites on everything and it is not easy for a 240+ lbs guy to make up once he bites.

Ellerbe has been around the ball a lot and has done a decent job in coverage, but I thought he was also supposed to be good at the blitz?

LB's in Coyles system seem to have a lot of unneeded pressure put on them. Veteran QBs are simply having the back hit the flat every time they see both of these guys lined up in the gap. Whether they blitz or not, it is impossible for them to catch the back once they're lined up in the gap. Furthermore, it is very hard to drop back far enough to hit the deeper zones. Rather than that fake blitz, I'd like to see them just come unannounced once in awhile. Coyle needs to fix this because Brees exposed this on MNF and you can bet Flacco and company were paying attention.

BTW, Dansby and Burnett were both good LBs and it took them about 6 weeks to fully understand what their assignments were in Coyles system. I suspect, and would hope, that a light turns on here as well.

The defensive system is definitely demanding of its linebackers. I haven't been too concerned as they are learning the system. We may want to start scouting linebackers (and offensive linemen) that are in a similar system as ours in order to know if they can handle the schemes.
