According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Daniel Thomas (ankle) is likely done for the season.

Thomas reportedly tore ligaments in his left ankle on an awkward tackle from Captain Munnerlyn during Sunday's loss to the Panthers. It leaves Lamar Miller as the unquestioned feature back and every-down player for the final five games of the year, with Mike Gillislee and Marcus Thigpen as backups. Thomas did show improvement this season as he forged a committee with Miller, rushing 77 times for 279 yards (3.62 YPC) with three touchdowns. We've still seen nothing to suggest the 2011 second-round pick will ever be a plus running back in the NFL. Thomas will be back in 2014 for the final year of his rookie contract.

I was really pulling for him to have a good year. The flashes of power and quick burst through the hole has been a tease these 3 seasons. I know people talk about his 3.6 avg but I think a better OL would help that. Hate to see him go someplace else and starting hitting 4.2-4.5 a carry.

It's hard to accurately evaluate our running backs. The OL is so bad that they are constantly being hit behind the LOS.

You know you say that Dave but, watching Mareno jump through tiny cracks in the line for 10 yds a pop makes me wonder...This is more of a coaching issue to me...They are just not getting the most out of these guys...On a few runs, Mareno jumped over the ankles of the guard and center...

You see guys like Shannahan take late round or undrafted guys and have them lead the league in rushing...The Patriots had there 3rd string right tackle in the game last night..Did you notice?

Miami had Kory Sheets on the roster and IMO he didn't seem to get the fairest shake to show what he could do.

Now all he is doing is tearing it up in the CFL league. I know not the NFL, but look at this:

Nine 100-yard rushing game by Sheets this season, tying him with George Reed for the Saskatchewan franchise record. Kory Sheets finished the season with 1,598 rushing yards, 215 yards behind Jon Cornish who lead the league with 1813 rushing yards. On November 24, 2013, in the 101st Grey Cup, Sheets established a CFL record for most yards rushing in a Grey Cup game, carrying 20 times for a total of 197 yards and two touchdowns, winning the game's most valuable player award in the process.[5] His Grey Cup record eclipsed that of Johnny Bright, who ran for 169 yards in 1956.

Why not bring him back and give him that fair chance now. Heck, even the Miami beat writers loves this guy's talent. I am not comparing apples to apples, but Cameron Wake revitalized his career from the CFL, why not Sheets?

Why settle for Sheets when we could have that guy Cornish who actually led the CFL in rushing! LOL

If Sheets is that good, he wouldn't be playing the CFL.

The only cracks that Miami's running backs are seeing in their o-line is when they shower.

Mak, see Cameron Wake. However, it is a very small list of players that excelled in the CFL and crossed over to the NFL for good success. I liked Sheets and it is just a thought not an answer.

However, here are the current available free agent running backs. I wonder if Ireland has brought any of them in and if you had the choice, who would you suggest?

Avaiable Free Agent Running Backs

Michael Turner
Cedric Benson
Montario Hardesty
Jahvid Best
Kevin Smith
Kahlil Bell
Joe McKnight
Brandon Jackson
Isaac Redman
Joseph Addai
Steve Slaton (KR)
Javon Ringer
Tim Hightower
D.J. Ware (KR)
Mewelde Moore (KR/PR)
Lance Ball
Ryan Torain

Yep, they are:

Quote:
OC Mike Sherman singled out Mike Gillislee as someone that has to step up in the wake of Daniel Thomas' ankle injury.Gillislee, a fifth-round rookie out of Florida, hasn't played in a game all season. He'll compete with Marcus Thigpen for backup reps. However, we fully expect Lamar Miller to be an every-down back over the final five games, only coming off the field when he needs a breather. Gillislee barely cracked the roster coming out of training camp.

Fully aware of that. 1 in a million. The FACT of the matter is that he is playing in the CFL. If he was that good, he would be plucked and playing for a NFL team. Again, sure there are players from the CFL that can contribute, but the Wake anomaly argument is weak.

Yes, not every CFL player can play in the NFL, but Cam Wake isn't as much of an anomaly as you think.

Warren Moon, Doug Flutie, Brandon Browner, Jeff Garcia, Rocket Ishmail, Mike Sellers and Mike Vanderdrunk... all plucked out of the CFL, just to name a few.

They all are! You pulled 7 players out of tens of thousands dating back to the 80's. 30+ years of players and you name 7, add wake, 8. Name 100, my point is proven.

There are 14 former CFL players and 1 former CFL coach in the NFL right now.

Again, my point is proven. That's less than 1% of the players in the NFL are from the CFL.

Your point was that if a player is good enough, he wouldn't be in the CFL.

The fact that there have been some successes from the CFL actually disproves your point.

There is hidden talent there, even if it is minimal. Teams don't "find" every player.

That's why I also threw in there that there are exceptions. Sheets would be plucked by now.

Maybe he would, maybe he wouldn't. Other teams had a chance at Cam Wake but it was the Dolphins that bit.

I'll go with wouldn't since he's still playing in the CFL.
