Post Hyde5: Duper says Wallace, 'has to catch last pass'

1. The last Dolphin receiver with the elite speed to get open deep like Mike Wallace was Mark Duper. And Duper says that speed is only part of the equation of a great receiver. The hands are the other.

“He’s got to catch that last pass,’’ said Duper said of the length-of-the-field heave by Ryan Tannehill that twisted Wallace around and went through his hands. “Let me ask you, did it hit his hands?”

It hit his hands.

“Then he got to catch it,’’ Duper said. “We started doing push-ups in practice when any ball hit our hands and we dropped it. It didn’t matter if it was a tough catch. We believed if it hit our hands, you catch it. ...

Some of the questions with Wallace and Tannehill have to do with chemistry. I asked Duper how long that took to have with Dan Marino.

“One game,’’ he said. “The first game we started together. That was it.”

They worked after practice, talked in games.

“I don’t see any communication between the receivers and the quarterbacks,’’ Duper said.

He said that’s not just on Tannehill. If he’s Wallace, he’s going to talk to Tannehill and get some extra work in.

I want them to do better,’’ Duper said. ...

I miss the old days.

Me too Mak. The electrifying Orange bowl for a packed house of rabid Dolphin fans on a Monday night with Marino slinging the rock.....ugh, makes me sick when I think about how much fun those days were.....

Miami eventually needs a brand new stadium, seats close to the field again to create that 12th man effect. New coaching staff to go along with it. Someday.

Maybe not. But Miami was a legit playoff contender annually back then. Shula and Marino gave Miami fans many years of competitive football.

Shula/Marino gave Miami '84, '85, '90 & '92. Miami missed the playoff from '86 to '89 & again in '91. They generally made the playoffs as the bottom feeder, outside the yrs listed above. The Marino yrs were not nearly as great as most recall them.

Not true, and you missed 94 (an historic badly officiated game)cost them. They had a chance to beat any team in the league at anytime and did many times.

Those Marino teams would beat the crap out of our current team.

Considering the current state of the way defense is played we would be the equivalent day Patriots. except we would never have gotten away with cheating for 8 years the tuck rule or snow plow calls.

Was '94 that epic opening day game where Marino and Bledsoe each threw for 400 yds and 4 or 5 TD passes?

Still one of my favorite Dolphin games.

Man that duel between Marino and Bledsoe was one of my all-time great football moments. It was Danny's first game back from his achilles tear ...... All the worries about how he'd fare post-injury went out the window.

And we stole Irving Fryar from who?......

I disagree I think the Marino years were great.

Jammer, I was at that game!!! I was so excited that year wanting to be there opening day when Marino came back from the Achilles injury. Little did I know I witnessed one of his very best games ever. 473 yards and 5 touchdown passes. That audible on 4th & 5 to Irving Fryar was classic.

I even had my seat right on the 50 yard line about 10 rows behind the Dolphins bench that day. Awesome memory.

I did miss '94, where they went 3-4 in the last 7 games. Guess that is why I missed it. Miami backed into the playoffs so many time I do not wish to remember. Not sure what game you are referencing.

Great as for watching Marino, but not great as for team goals. Has anyone forgotten the annual Dec. swoon Miami had during those time?

Yep, back then it was Buffalo as our Division nemesis. Marv Levy owned the Dolphins and won EVERY big meaningful game that counted towards either a Division title or playoff matchup.

Let's face it ... Wallace is not an elite receiver. I don't want to take anything away from Wallace in that we have seen MANY receivers with elite speed not able to make it in the NFL, but for the money that he commanded in free agency, he should have caught that last pass. I'm not sure if we would have had the time to do a quick snap to stop the clock, but that isn't the issue.

His TD pass was a tough catch so its not like he isn't capable. Just not consistent.

With the way he is being used Miami should have just drafted Markus Wheaton or signed Heyward Bey.

Who knows, if this group stays together next year maybe things turn around. Not like that hasn't happened before.

Wallace is a body catcher. He could not corral the ball against his body.

Im pretty sure he does but most elite WRs practice catching with their hands and do hand catching drills. When he uses his hands to snatch a pass out of the air its like he has bricks for hands. I just dont want to see him keep going down when he actually does catch the ball.

Next year hopefully will be better because Keller should back (if he is not cut) and Gibson. Id like to see them draft the TE out of NC. That kid is good.

So sick of this being the team motto every November.

Keller signed a one year deal....hes gone.

And I agree that we should have drafted a guy....theres multiple rookies who have played way better than mike wallace. There is time to turn it around...we are still in it....id be thrilled with dumb luck to get in the playoffs.

Keenan Allen

Terrance Williams (before austin miles came back)

Arron Dobson and Deandre Hopkins arguably

Though I admit...wallace moved past all but allen in my mind.

But woukd you rather have one of these 4...cheap.....or mike at what hes costing us.
