Post Time for Cameron Wake to wake up
Quote:
by: Omar Kelly April 21st, 2010

...

He’s got a dynamic first step, and athletic ability that’s unmatched (do you see the way his body bends when he turns the corner) by anyone presently on the team’s roster

...

Can he handle getting double-teams by a tackle and a tight end. Is he ready to have an NFL tailback or fullback hip hip repeatedly

...

In the video you’ll see that Wake is quick, he’s athletic, and he’s got a dynamic first step.
But you’ll also notice he’s undersized (that’s why the Trifecta’s prototype is so important), gets stood up a lot on running plays, and sometimes gets washed away by single blocks.
You also don’t see him dropping back into coverage because his struggles with that aspect of his new position prevented last year’s coaches from trusting him with that aspect of the hybrid linebacker position.
He also primarily rushes from the left side, which leaves that weakside spot open for another speedy guy. But, can Wake learn how to set the end on the strong side, or will he have to be moved over to the vacancy created by Joey Porter and Jason Taylor’s banishment

...

Watch the video in that Article. LOL @ Wake abusing that Carolina Tackle. Holy cow. I like that he can beat tackles with his speed and agility or with his bull rush. I think he is going to have quite a few sacks for us this year.

He had so many near sacks on that video it's not even funny. He can really bring the pressure fast and get upfield with a quickness. He's going to need to learn the dissect those screens a little better and he does need to work on his run defense, but his pass rush is sometimes amazing.

Yeah that was ridiculous. Wake is a beast from a pass rush standpoint, no doubt. I would be surprised if Mike Nolan did not get 12+ sacks out of him in 2010.

I don't really care about the coverage. If they move him to the weakside, all I want is for him to be half decent against the run and I'm sold on him as a starter. Problem is he's atrocious against the run currently.

dont know where they get that he is undersized. The kid is 6'3" 250lbs. For an OLB that is not undersized, I mean what do u want a 300lb+ OLB. Of course when running the ball he may get stood up by a 350lb G and 300lb tackle. Thats where technique and trusting his instincts is gonna come into play. I think he'll be more confident this year about hi reads on the field and should get alot more PT to help him out.

Wasn't he rated as the most efficient pass rusher in the NFL somewhere? I like Wake, always have (for our part at least). Can't wait to see his sack count this year as a starter. Hopefully on the weak side.

Miami has ZERO legitimate starters at the OLB position. None.

And no, Cam is not a legit starter in a base defense yet.

how is he going to get at least 12 sacks if he isnt a legitimate starter?

He'll get good playing time, but as far as being a starter in a base defense, he's just not good enough against the run yet.

Didn't you hear? This regime wants every player above 6'7" and 330+ pounds. Bigger=better.

Cam is the ideal size for Parcells at OLB. As far as Cam stepping up, the coaches obviously thought his play against the run was sub par, otherwise he would have been on the field more.

He was by far the best pass rusher on the team per snap.

Well, we will find out if Miami draft him or not if he is available.

More than he got last year. LOL.

I'd say 20% of the first down snaps, along with 100% of the 3rd and long snaps, and maybe some 2nd down snaps as well depending on distance.

No, I'm asking you. How is Wake the ideal size, but Hughes is undersized. Hughes is 5 lbs heavier, but an inch shorter.

I have read that the group likes the OLB in the 6'3 range, 245-265 lbs range. Dude, I am just giving an opinion on what I think from what I have read.

I have no problem with Hughes size, but I'm not the one making the pick.

My eyeballs. Watch that video.. and watch him against the run. He is not good against the run. Lol. At all. But, a lot of great pass rushing greats aren't or weren't. He will get better though.

My thoughts exactly. He is freakish. They should just put him a WOLB.. and let him rush full time. This guy could have a monster year for us.

The thing I noticed about his pass rush moves.. Were they all seemed very instinctual and not coached. With some more coaching.. This guy is going to phenomenal.

You are also correct about him getting up field quick. Tackles.. Right or Left are going to have problems with his speed/power combination.

Who else is going to be that guy??

Someone we may or may not draft this weekend???

I think Cam Wake is a legit started based on precess of elimination... Porter - eliminated. Taylor - eliminated..

Yup, Cam wake is a starter in the NFL....

There no question that Cam is a phenomenal pass rusher. He is so quick and explosive coming off the edge. He just has to do a better job against the run.

Um...I did. Only one play (@ New England) did he not hold up his gap. That play he jumped inside, got sucked in and the play went outside. Other than that, they were draw plays...plays designed to let the DE's rush up field....it's up to the NT (which sucks on the this team) and ILB (which sucked) to make that play.

I saw no evidence of Wake being so awful against the run that he can't play every down.

I like WAKE ALOT! I wish he would have gotten more playing time last year, but looks like (today) that he'll need to step up his game and be more of an all down guy, which I believe he can be. I'm excited to see him more! Get used to his name being called! Joey who!?!? Jason wha?!?!?

I keep seeing everyone claim he is bad against the run... But why are we so sure of this?

Is it just because of lack of experience?

He played in the CFL, prominent passing offenses...

I really didnt see the fins putting him in on 2nd and 2 last year.. It appeared he was used as a pass rusher only, and also would go in for Porter and Taylor in pass rush situations...

With Wake as our pass rusher I say we need to get Williams in round 1... A nice gap filling NT would be helpful if this talk about Wake being bad against the run is true..

I am just not seeing anything to support that aside from lack of experience... He was on a mission when on the field... Like the coach said: "see that prettty boy with the 12 on his jersey? Go get him"

Well, maybe there was a reason that Paul Pasquloni(sp) was fired. But I remember reading comments from him during the season stating that Cam had to get much better against the run if he wanted to see more playing time.

He certainly will get his chance this year.

He does seem to flutter a lot in the run plays in that vid...However the pass rushing looks great.

If Wake can be a full-time starter, he will be a pleasant surprise. Double-digit sacks and a great motor.

Oh, just that when he has to track the blocking and the runner he is not as secure in his steps and gets caught up a lot by tackles

Am I completely wrong?
