They have traded the No. 12 overall selection in the first round to San Diego for No. 28 overall. The Dolphins also gave up their fourth round pick (110 overall) and a sixth round pick (173 overall).

The Dolphins got the San Diego second-round pick, No. 40 overall, and a fourth round pick (126 overall). .... The Dolphins got linebacker Tim Dobbins.

Of note: Dobbins, who was originally a 2006 fifth-round pick (151 overall), has started 10 games in his four year NFL career. Last season former first-team All-Big 12 selection contributed 55 tackles, one sack, one interception and forced one fumble. In San Diego he was a core special teams contributor, making 53 tackles in the third phase of the game. It's likely Dobbins will compete with Channing Crowder, Reggie Torbor and J.D. Folsom for playing time as the inside linebacker who lines up next to Karlos Dansby.

He will back up and play special teams. He's not going to see much playing time at LB I'm sure, but he will still contribute. Maybe special teams can become a strong point on this team for once.

could become primary backup to Dansby and Crowder, taking Torbor's spot.......and special teams help.

I don't see much else from this guy.......we'll see how he does in camp.

This is an interesting pick up. Nolan likes to bring guys in that play a specific role. He had an opportunity to see this guy play against him twice last season while he was the D-Coordinator for Denver. I'm sure there is a specific defensive package that Nolan wants to use him for. I think our defense is going to get tweeked quite a bit this offseason. It might be a 3-4, but I think it will look very different than the way we ran it last year.

One interesting stat:

In 4 seasons (10 starts) Dobbins has 2 INTs and 5 FF
In 5 seasons (63 starts) Crowder has 1 INT and 3 FF.

I know turnovers aren't everything, but it appears that Dobbins makes the most of his limited playing time.

Torbor has a pretty hefty contract for a backup. Makes you wonder.

I thought this was very interesting. Maybe he will not be back up material for long ... but thrown into the competition.

Tim Dobbins, who started two games in San Diego, looks like an unheralded name to watch after coming to the Dolphins in the first-round trade. Dobbins had 55 tackles last year, which compares favorably to the Dolphins' starting linebackers last year of Channing Crowder (51) and Akin Ayodele (71). He also had a forced fumble, a sack and an interception. Neither Crowder nor Ayodele had one of each.

Maybe we brought him in to push Crowder? Ayodele is already out for Dansby.
