Wake Wants To Be A Complete Linebacker
Quote:
Cameron Wake turned out to be as good as advertised as a pass rusher in his first year with the Dolphins. But as he approaches his second season in the NFL, the former CFL star has his sights set on becoming a complete linebacker.

Wake says the transition from defensive end with the British Columbia Lions to outside linebacker with the Dolphins has been quite a challenge. And the work is far from done.

“Man, I don’t know if I’ll ever get there,” Wake said. “Last year I was a work in progress. Now if I feel I’m a work in progress, too. Every day I want to get better at something. Find something you want to get better (at) today and work on that, and that’s how I feel every day going forward.”

At stake for Wake is a spot in the starting lineup at outside linebacker, where both of last year’s starters — Joey Porter and Jason Taylor — are now with new teams.

Based strictly on pass rushing, Wake would be a no-brainer choice. But the Dolphins are looking for starters who also can consistently do against a good job against the run and in coverage.

Wake’s coaches certainly see that kind of potential in him.

“Our hope is that he can be an every-down player,” said Coach Tony Sparano. “I would hope certainly that he can be an every-down player, that’s why we brought him here. It wasn’t just to be a pass-rush specialist. I mean, if at the end of this, that’s what Cam is, then we’re going to find a way to have him involved that way. But our hope is that we can get this guy to be an every-down player.”

I don't see it as impossible. He handled NFL level blocking just fine and picking up the run game is gonna take some time, but why not. He's a physical beast and seems smart enough

Just about every guy that comes into the NFL has the physical attributes to play...when you come in on 3rd down and told to rush the passer and that's it, it's fairly simple. It's when you throw in all the other situations and plays that makes him complete.

I hope he can do it, but I haven't seen enough to know. With Porter/Taylor on one side, and Wake a rookie pass rusher, he was facing quite a few single blocks. He's the only pass rusher on the team now...can he create enough attention and still make plays? Can he fend off two/three blockers on a run play? Can Nolan mix it up enough to keep offenses on their heels? Can someone else step up to help take the pass rushing pressures off of Wake?

There's too many questions on defense...and I think a lot of it hinges on Wake's development.

Since Ireland didn't go after a pass rusher, I'm assuming they feel very strong about Wake and confident in him manning that position....but Ireland also thought Gibril Wilson could man the free safety spot.

So, which linebacker doesn't want to be a complete linebacker? The fact that he is in the NFL speaks of his hard work and commitment. I'm rooting for him.

I hope so. We are young and thin at OLB

I agree, Iowafin. Half of my comment was fueled by my fear of our OLB depth and just plain hope that he can do it ;)
