The Miami Dolphins agreed to a contract with their last unsigned rookie draft pick, guard Michael Deiter.
The Dolphins selected Deiter, from Wisconsin, with their third-round pick.
Deiter has spent time practicing at left and right guard and is likely to start at one of those spots this season.
After Miami general manager Chris Grier made the selection, he said of Deiter: “He’s tough, he’s smart, he’s versatile. The program has done a great job of producing offensive linemen in the league, as well at the collegiate level. Again, he fits all of the boxes for us.”
Deiter, 6-foot-6, 310 pounds, would probably play left guard for Miami this season if the Dolphins leave starting right guard Jesse Davis in place. At the recent mandatory minicamp, Davis shifted to right tackle and Deiter shifted to right guard.
In that alignment, veteran Chris Reed could play left guard. In an ideal world, free agent signee Jordan Mills plays so well at right tackle in the summer that Deiter and Davis can play guard. After he was drafted, Deiter said has more experience and comfort on the left side of the line.
