Quote:
Ireland, here in Mobile, Ala., scouting the Senior Bowl, just shook his head when I asked him Wednesday if he wanted to put out the Porter fire.
"There's not a fire," Ireland said, his voice rising. "There's no fire."
Ireland downplayed sketchy reports about a radio interview Porter apparently gave last week with his hometown station in Bakersfield, Calif., one in which Porter reportedly let it be known how unhappy he was this past season with the Dolphins and how he expected to play elsewhere in 2010.
Now, on the surface this wouldn't be so surprising, but there's one little problem: There is no archive of the interview on the KISV-FM Hot 94.1 Web site. There is no transcript. And a man who goes by "Romeo in the Morning," the host who conducted the interview with Porter, hasn't returned phone and email messages as of late Wednesday afternoon.
Porter? J-Peezy isn't talking publicly but privately the former Pro Bowl linebacker appears to be denying ever making such comments.
Per a source from outside the Dolphins organization, Ireland has spoken this week by phone with Jeff Sperbeck, Porter's agent. But as for some sort of high-level sitdown between the two sides, there are no indications that has happened.
"I didn’t hear the Joey stuff," Ireland said. "There’s no transcript."
Has Porter expressed his dissatisfaction to the Dolphins organization or made it known he doesn't want to return for a fourth season in South Florida?
"Not to my knowledge," Ireland said. "He may have said something to Tony, I don’t know. He hasn’t said anything to me. We didn't play him that one game. Obviously there were some things that came out, but other than that he was a pretty good soldier at the end of the year, a real good soldier."
