UUGGHHHH.......

Dolphins signed coach Joe Philbin to a one-year extension through 2016.
"You don't get the best from someone when operating with a gun to their head," was owner Stephen Ross' explanation for extending Philbin's deal. Turning 54 years old this July, Philbin's Dolphins teams have gone 7-9, 8-8, and 8-8 through three years on the job. You can read where Philbin finished in Patrick Daugherty's ranking of the NFL's head coaches at the link below.

I hope he learns how to coach. How did Ross become so rich? This is a dumb investment.

This move was expected. Im surprised it took them 2 months to make it official.

Philbin has no excuses this season.

He's returning 8 of 11 starters on Defense, with Suh as a major upgrade.
He's got a franchise QB.... 2 budding WR's, and a 1000 yard RB.

Failure to make the playoffs with a 3rd place schedule will be unacceptable.

Look at it this way. This is Philbin's 4th season. Ross bucked the trend and stayed the course. Philbin will be the 3rd longest tenured coach in franchise history at season's end. If he can not make it happen this season, he never will.

Nothing says I have zero confidence in my coach than a one-yr extension.

darn, goes to show how awful this franchise has been post Shula. It would be interesting to see coaching longevity stats throughout the league in comparison.

Actually people do perform better when they fear getting fired.

AFCE yea, I checked that out myself... and was shocked

1 George Wilson 1966–1969
2 Don Shula † 1970–1995
3 Jimmy Johnson 1996–1999
4 Dave Wannstedt 2000–2004
5 Jim Bates 2004
6 Nick Saban* 2005–2006
7 Cam Cameron 2007
8 Tony Sparano 2008–2011
9 Todd Bowles 2011
10 Joe Philbin 2012–

So Don coached 26 seasons.
Wannstedt coached 5 seasons.
Johnson, Sparano, & Wilson all coached 4 seasons.

Saban had 2
Cameron had 1
Bowles and Bates had interim status.

So at the end of the 2015 season, Philbin will be 4 seasons in, and would then be the 3rd longest tenured coach in franchise history. With Wannstedt being the only one between himself and the Don.

Again, the list is skewered by the fact that we had the Don for soooooo long. But since then, we've had:
4 year- Johnson
5 year- Wanny
1 year- Cameron
2 year- Saban
4 year- Sparano
4 year - Philbin.

Whether its the smart move or not, I still believe staying the course is the right move. We've hit the reset button 1 too many times in the past 2 decades. Let's hope Philbin can actually do something with it.... Each one of these coaches showed flashes... but thats all.

Johnson did great in drafting our 2000's defensive staples, but whiffed in other areas.
Wanny was a trainwreck, but he did get us Ricky Williams- our only NFL leading runner
Saban had his moments... that 6 game win streak to end the season was promising.
Cameron had the NFL's top all purpose back until the injury derailed the season.
Sparano caught lightning in a bottle in year 1, but easily outdated himself.

None of these guys had a franchise QB in his prime! (Johnson had the end of Marino).

Hope springs eternal...

The extension means nothing in terms of Joe's long term job security. Sparano was given an extension 10 games before he was fired.

I agree entirely. It is the same message if he is not extended or if he is: your job is at stake. Show something good or be shown the door.

That's not what Chili Palmer said in "Get Shorty".

I think you're right or it would have been a 2 year extension. At least I hope.

Totally agree, that is a no confidence signing, funny how Ross actually mentioned gun to the head, because, well, it's still pointed right at his head.
