Per the article:

"Payton, 58, has three years remaining on his deal with the Saints after signing his latest extension in 2019. So, New Orleans would maintain his rights if he decides to return to coaching -- and could require compensation if he wants to coach for another team."

Maybe he'll be available in 3 years, when we fire whoever we're about to hire

That or Ross just ponies up and buys him a new shiny Payton.

I'd give up Miami's No. 1 pick for him.

I’d give up a 1st round draft pick for him.
I know he has already won a SB, but he strikes me as still being hungry. I wouldn’t make it a condition to keep Tua, but I feel if there were anyone who would match up well, it’s Tua (Brees Jr.) and Payton.
I’d love to see what he can do with our offense.

I really can't see him coaching in 2022.

He had a really rough year and I think he'll be taking time off.

That being said, I'd bring him in as an offense/QB consultant in a heartbeat, in whatever capacity he wants. At least keep him on the horn until he wants another go at it.

He’s leaving coaching but strikes you as still being hungry?

Fair point, but I’m reading between the lines. I think he is leaving more because of differences with ownership on the direction of the team. They are WAAAAY over the cap this year. That’s going to necessitate lots of cuts. I don’t see them being competitive in 2022. Perhaps they disagree on the path forward.

A guy walking away from a mess is not the person I want running the show in Miami this year.

Everyone says he is burned out, and there is talk he may take some time in the booth. That would be good for him and make him hungry for another championship rather than to go to another team and go through the motions trying to get your mojo back.

If there is a team he'd like to go to coach for would be the Cowboys and Jerry Jones may pull that trigger next year if Payton wants to go back into coaching after a year off. I'm not sure how thrilled Jones is about McCarthy after an early exit in the playoffs after so much hope.

Mark the tape, Payton is not a guy that will win a Superbowl again. Like Cowher, Dungy, etc, these guys get burned out after winning Superbowls and having to go thru the process again.

You kind of need an emotionless bastard like Bill Bellicheck to have a lifer that doesn't get burned out.

Yup

Sounds kinda crazy but for my money Payton is one of the least valid candidates for this Miami team right now. He up and bounced on the Saints.

I’d rather get King Khakis from the great northern lakes.

Payton is proof that a coach that touches the top is not interested in starting at the bottom again. They want it easy.

He has a handshake agreement with Jerry Jones.

This right here. I don't want a coward coaching my team. That's what he's doing. He knows the Saints are $74 million over the cap and will have to cut a lot of players to get under. He knows the team is going to be a bottom feeder for awhile and can't take that heat.

Saints own him for the next three yrs. Any team wanting to hire him will have to give up compensation.
